Thunderbolt Condo Fire

For the second time today, Thunderbolt FD is on the scene of a condo fire on Whatley Ave. The fire rekindled since they cleared up from the original fire this morning. Just as in this morning's fire, Southside Fire is on scene for mutual aid and has provided LADDER 8.

Fireground radio traffic is on 3 Chatham-Effingham TRS talkgroups:

Scanning and Monitoring Presentation at the February Coastal Amateur Radio Society Meeting

I've been asked to give a presentation on scanning and monitoring at the February Coastal Amateur Radio Society (CARS) Meeting. It will be at 7:00 PM on February 2, 2009 at the White Bluff Presbyterian Church. The presentation will follow the regular business meeting. Visitors are always welcome!

I have decided to do a presentation on basic scanning and monitoring in the Savannah area, concentrating on Public Safety and Military Aviation. Topics I'll cover are:
  • What there is to monitor
  • What type of radio systems are in use
  • What equipment is needed to monitor it

I'll be attempting to aim the presentation towards the novice scanning and monitoring enthusiast. Presenting it to the amateur radio club, I'll also be giving it a ham radio twist, pointing out how some activity can be monitored with amateur radio gear.

Good Sunday on the Radio and 6 Meter E-Skip

I worked amateur radio a good bit on Sunday while watching the 24 Hours of Daytona and after the 24 Hours and it was a good day on the radios. I started out the day by checking in to the Georgia Cracker Net on 80 Meters and the South CARS Net on 40 Meters. Later in the day, I checked into the GA Baptist Hams net and the GA ARES Net on 80 Meters. After working a couple of Winter Field Day stations, I worked the National Electronics Museum special event station on 20 and 40 meters. For DX, there was Cuba and Puerto Rico on 20 Meters and Mexico on 6 Meters. To cap the day off, I worked Alaska twice on 20 Meters for my first Alaska contacts!

From Saturday evening through yesterday evening, 6 Meters was with Sporadic E propagation. I worked Mexico, Ontario, Quebec, Iowa, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Vermont while picking up 3 new grids: DL99, EN80, and EN21.

Unfortunately, the E-Skip seemed to peter out towards last night. I heard very little around 2100 local, which is the time for the Southeast GA 6 Meter Ragchew Net; it would have been great to have had a little bit of DX for the net.

B-17 at the Eighth Air Force Musuem Comes Together

The B-17 at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum is now almost fully assembled. Part of the tail is missing, but otherwise it is almost complete. It currently does not have any of its turrets due to being in civilian service, but they are going to try to locate some to restore it to it's wartime configuration. A lot of paint and interior work is still to come, but it is fantastic to see it in one piece.

Thanks to Al Stern, Jack Nesmith, and others who assisted with identification of callsigns and frequenices, particularly with the USS Eisenhower CSG which for the most part has remained on the fringe of my listening range.

HF Antenna Problems Revisited

We have found out that the HF antenna does in fact work. Signals just aren't passed from the antenna to the radio very well when a dog has chewed the feedline in two. A mug shot of the offender is seen at the right!

This morning while doing some cleaning. a piece of chewed coax was found. It didn't take very long to assume that it could be the reason why the HF radios aren't working correctly. In short time, a gap in the HF antenna feedline was found behind a desk. Of course, the dog chewed through in a location that we would have to specifically be looking in order to find it - it is somewhat hidden.

It is safe to say that she has been thoroughly chastised and I have threatened to put 100 watts through her mouth should I catch her chewing the coax in the future...

After fixing thie feedline with a couple of PL-259s and a barrel connector, we put the FT-897D on the air and tried everything out. Using the North American QSO Party as a testbed, I worked 26 stations; 20 on 20-Meters, 20 on 40-Meters, and 6 on 80-meters. Everything is now working as it should.

HG1848I QSL Card

Back on 10 October 2008, I worked HG1848I, a Hungarian special event station in memory of the Hungarian War of Independence. I have to admit that the callsign threw me for a loop because it's unusual to hear an amateur radio callsign with that many numbers in it. After discovering what the station was, I couldn't wait for the QSL. The QSL arrived in the mail today and it is a terrific card.

B-17G 'City of Savannah' arrives at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum

From today's Savannah Morning News:

On Dec. 3, 1944, a rare pause interrupted the assembly line at Hunter Field as soldiers and civilians gathered on the flight line to christen one of the gleaming B-17Gs as the City of Savannah.

The whole article can be read here. An article about the Might Eighth Air Force Museum's plans for the B-17 can read here.

When I read the Savannah Morning News at lunch today, I noticed a story about a B-17G fuselage being delivered to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum at noon today. After lunch, I grabbed by camera, the BC-396, and the FT-50 and headed out to the Museum. I arrived as the arrival ceremony was ending and hung around to watch them remove the fuselage from the flatbed and the movement of some of the pieces.

All Coast Aircraft Recovery and Les Chapman Transport moved the B-17. All Coast Aircraft Recovery will also be doing the reassembly of the aircraft.

I did not see a serial or tail number on the fuselage or wing sections. I never did see the tail, but the serial will probably be on it. The aircraft did have a tail number, though: N66571.

Watching the movement was fascinating. To remove the fuselage from the flatbed, they used a crane from Tim's Cranes and Rigging to lift the fuselage up in the air. They then drove the truck out from underneath and set it down on wheels that were affixed to the fuselage. The tail rested on a 4x4 underneath the tailwheel assembly. A forklift was being used to move the wing sections around. During the first wing section move, they had to move some fencing around one of the museum's HVAC units. Apprarently one of the fence posts caught an undergound water line as it came out and caused a leak. This put a delay in the works and they were trying to stop the leak when I left.

I can't wait to see the aircraft assembled an put on display inside. It will be wonderful to have a restored B-17 in Savannah! More photos that I took of the move and the B-17 can be found here.

VMFA(AW)-224 Deploys to Japan This Week

According to news reports from WSAV and WTOC in Savannah, VMFA(AW)-224 deploys to Japan for a six month rotation this week. Approximately 20 personnel departed today with the bulk of the squadron to follow later in the week. I was not around the radios today, so I didn't hear if the squadron's F/A-18s departed or if it was an advance party that departed.

HF Antenna Problems

I'll be off the air for HF utility monitoring and amateur radio operating for a short while. We've got some unknown problems with the G5RV and it is going to have to be replaced. At this point, the suspicion is that the problem is either in the balun between the twin lead and the coax or in the coax or twin lead itself.

Silent Key - Bill Faust, AD4AZ

This morning, I received terrible news from Steve Jonas, W4SDJ. Bill Faust, AD4AZ passed away in his sleep last night. It is surprise news, as Bill was at the Coastal Amateur Radio Society meeting last night and appeared to be well.

Bill was one of the first who congratulated me and welcomed me to HF when I upgraded to General last year. When I was doing packet on 2 Meters not long after I was originally licensed, he was one of the first packet contacts I had.

My condolences to Bill's family and friends. He was a respected member of the Savannah amateur radio community; he will be missed.

As soon as I got home from work this afternoon, I checked HF conditions and tried to get my 7 year old nephew Kaleb on the air for Kid's Day. 20 Meters was still open, so I tried to hunt down some stations. Not hearing any, I started calling CQ and got three stations for Kaleb to talk to: W5HFS in Austin,TX, W1WWX in Orange, MA, and VE3ZYN in Toronto, Ontario. My father Mac (Jr.), AF4KL was showing Kaleb where he was talking to in an Atlas and giving him an idea of the distance to thoses stations.

I think Kaleb was pretty impressed with getting to talk to stations outside of the local area, particularly to Canada! Hopefully we're growing an interest in radio with him and developing another radio hobbyist...
