Scanning and Monitoring Presentation at the February Coastal Amateur Radio Society Meeting
I have decided to do a presentation on basic scanning and monitoring in the Savannah area, concentrating on Public Safety and Military Aviation. Topics I'll cover are:
- What there is to monitor
- What type of radio systems are in use
- What equipment is needed to monitor it
I'll be attempting to aim the presentation towards the novice scanning and monitoring enthusiast. Presenting it to the amateur radio club, I'll also be giving it a ham radio twist, pointing out how some activity can be monitored with amateur radio gear.

Good Sunday on the Radio and 6 Meter E-Skip
From Saturday evening through yesterday evening, 6 Meters was with Sporadic E propagation. I worked Mexico, Ontario, Quebec, Iowa, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Vermont while picking up 3 new grids: DL99, EN80, and EN21.
Unfortunately, the E-Skip seemed to peter out towards last night. I heard very little around 2100 local, which is the time for the Southeast GA 6 Meter Ragchew Net; it would have been great to have had a little bit of DX for the net.

B-17 at the Eighth Air Force Musuem Comes Together
The B-17 at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum is now almost fully assembled. Part of the tail is missing, but otherwise it is almost complete. It currently does not have any of its turrets due to being in civilian service, but they are going to try to locate some to restore it to it's wartime configuration. A lot of paint and interior work is still to come, but it is fantastic to see it in one piece.

HF Antenna Problems Revisited
This morning while doing some cleaning. a piece of chewed coax was found. It didn't take very long to assume that it could be the reason why the HF radios aren't working correctly. In short time, a gap in the HF antenna feedline was found behind a desk. Of course, the dog chewed through in a location that we would have to specifically be looking in order to find it - it is somewhat hidden.
It is safe to say that she has been thoroughly chastised and I have threatened to put 100 watts through her mouth should I catch her chewing the coax in the future...
After fixing thie feedline with a couple of PL-259s and a barrel connector, we put the FT-897D on the air and tried everything out. Using the North American QSO Party as a testbed, I worked 26 stations; 20 on 20-Meters, 20 on 40-Meters, and 6 on 80-meters. Everything is now working as it should.

B-17G 'City of Savannah' arrives at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum
On Dec. 3, 1944, a rare pause interrupted the assembly line at Hunter Field as soldiers and civilians gathered on the flight line to christen one of the gleaming B-17Gs as the City of Savannah.
The whole article can be read here. An article about the Might Eighth Air Force Museum's plans for the B-17 can read here.
When I read the Savannah Morning News at lunch today, I noticed a story about a B-17G fuselage being delivered to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum at noon today. After lunch, I grabbed by camera, the BC-396, and the FT-50 and headed out to the Museum. I arrived as the arrival ceremony was ending and hung around to watch them remove the fuselage from the flatbed and the movement of some of the pieces.
All Coast Aircraft Recovery and Les Chapman Transport moved the B-17. All Coast Aircraft Recovery will also be doing the reassembly of the aircraft.
I did not see a serial or tail number on the fuselage or wing sections. I never did see the tail, but the serial will probably be on it. The aircraft did have a tail number, though: N66571.
Watching the movement was fascinating. To remove the fuselage from the flatbed, they used a crane from Tim's Cranes and Rigging to lift the fuselage up in the air. They then drove the truck out from underneath and set it down on wheels that were affixed to the fuselage. The tail rested on a 4x4 underneath the tailwheel assembly. A forklift was being used to move the wing sections around. During the first wing section move, they had to move some fencing around one of the museum's HVAC units. Apprarently one of the fence posts caught an undergound water line as it came out and caused a leak. This put a delay in the works and they were trying to stop the leak when I left.
I can't wait to see the aircraft assembled an put on display inside. It will be wonderful to have a restored B-17 in Savannah! More photos that I took of the move and the B-17 can be found here.

Silent Key - Bill Faust, AD4AZ
Bill was one of the first who congratulated me and welcomed me to HF when I upgraded to General last year. When I was doing packet on 2 Meters not long after I was originally licensed, he was one of the first packet contacts I had.
My condolences to Bill's family and friends. He was a respected member of the Savannah amateur radio community; he will be missed.
