Hunter Crash/Fire is working an incident in which the foam system in a hangar went off. After consultations with Environmental, they are diluting the foam outside of the hangar with water and washing it down the storm drains. Communications are on TG 3504 of the Fort Stewart/Hunter AAF TRS. An aircraft was in the hangar, although damage is unknown. All personnel have been reported accounted for. The hangar is apparently Hangar 1130.
On 77.725, 224 MI Bn Ops, SUNNY OPS has told SUNNY 22 that the foam system went off in the "EW Hangar." SUNNY 22 inquired if an aircraft was still in the hangar and was told yes and that a hatch was open. Based on the context of the conversation, I'm guessing that the EW hangar is a 224 MI Bn hangar.

Fort Stewart Forestry Article

The Savannah Morning News had a good article this morning on Fort Stewart Forestry and the prescribed burns that they do during the Spring and Summer. There is radio traffic to monitor for the prescribed burns if you have digital and federal VHF capabilities with your radio. Much of the traffic from the forestry units on the ground is on TG 2480 of the Fort Stewart/Hunter AAF TRS. Traffic between the ground units and the helicopter that the article mentions is on 163.5625.

56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team to Train at Fort Stewart
It seems that the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (TX Army National Guard) will be training at Fort Stewart much as the 76th BCT did in January and February of this year.
I heard some traffic on the Fort Stewart TRS last week that makes it sound like the 4th Cav Bde will once again be doing the training. Some of the same callsigns have been heard: STALKER, RENEGADE, BLACKJACK, THUNDER, GUNNER, and DAGGER callsigns were heard on TG 10096. WOLVERINE was heard on TG 8944

4th Cavalry Brigade Talkgroup Assignments
I have been using the ID Tracker and BC796D combination to track the 4th Cavalry Brigade activity on the Fort Stewart/Hunter AAF TRS much as I have been using it to figure out the new MedStar activity on the Chatham-Effingham TRS. It has been an invaluable tool because it allows me to run it unattended while it matches audio to talkgroup IDs. I have been able to sit down the last few mornings and afternoons and match ID Tracker's data and audio to my own scribbled notes from mobile monitoring.
As a result, I have been able to identify a few more 4th Cavalry Brigade talkgroup assignments. My listing of identified 4th Cav Bde assignments are:

4th Cavalry Brigade at Fort Stewart
On 08 January 2008, Larry Van Horn, on his Monitoring Times MilCom blog, posted the following report about the 76th Brigade Combat Team, IN ARNG deploying to Fort Stewart for training:

The 76th BCT is indeed at Fort Stewart training. Another unit, the 4th Cavalry Brigade, has deployed to Fort Stewart to train the 76th BCT. The 4th Cavalry Brigade is a unit dedicated to training other units to deploy to combat areas. They are normally based at Fort Knox, but have deployed to Fort Stewart to conduct the 76th BCT's training.
I have not been able to monitor any of the 76th BCT's traffic. I have been able to monitor some of the 4th Cavalry's training coordination communications on the Fort Stewart Trunked Repeater System. There has been no tactical communication to monitor, but there has been interesting coordination traffic.

Fort Stewart Range Fires
Fort Stewart Forestry is working fires in the B12 and B13 areas of the Fort Stewart Ranges. Ground units are fighting the fire with a helicopter overhead (Helo 5TV) spotting the fires. Air to Ground from Helo 5TV is on 163.5625. Forestry ground units are on talkgroup 2480 (P25 Digital) of the Fort Stewart-Hunter AAF trunked system. Forestry is coordinating entry/exit of range areas and range activity on TG 2288 (P25 Digital) of the trunked system.

Fort Stewart Exercise
In a post yesterday, I mentioned the activity at Fort Stewart. Aircraft Crash at Fort Stewart
Thanks to Adam W. from Scan Savannah who gave me the heads up on this incident, otherwise I would have missed it. Unfortunately, this aircraft crash was fatal, as a result I am withholding the N-number from this post in case the families of the deceased have not been notified yet. I have not seen any identifications on the TV News or the Newspaper, so I can only assume that family notifications are not complete.
Communications seemed to be primarily on Fort Stewart Fire Tac 1 (TG 3472 of the Fort Stewart/Hunter AAF TRS) and on 279.625 (Marne Radio). The tower at Wright AAF on Fort Stewart relayed traffic between Fort Stewart Fire Incident Command, who only had the UHF trunked radios and RESCUE 6542 who was on 279.625. RESCUE 6542, a USCG HH-65C from Air Station Savannah at Hunter AAF picked up the ELT from the crashed aircraft and triangulated it's location. After DFing the ELT, they were then able to locate a wing from the aircraft and the coordinates were passed to the Fire crews. Fort Stewart MEDIC 4 located the wreckage and a body at 11:40 PM. 3 0ther bodies were located later in the search and recovery operations. Throughout the search, RESCUE 6542 was also in communications with USCG Sector Charleston and Air Station Savannah.
Despite being called in late in the game (essentially 4 hours after the crash occurred), the Coast Guard quickly and efficiently located the wreck location and did a good job of vectoring the ground crews in despite the lack of direct communication (they apparently did toward the end via a Lt. from the Civil Air Patrol). I kept wondering throughout why Fort Stewart Fire was not equipped with some sort of radio to communicate with air assets. Given that one of their taskings is aircraft crashes, you would think that they would have the equipment to communicate on airband,military frequencies, or VHF land mobile to contact search aircraft directly.

UAV Crash at Fort Stewart
I managed to monitor part of an interesting incident on 29 January 2007: the crash of a Shadow UAV during training by the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Divsion at Fort Stewart. The UAV belonged to A/2-3 BTB; search and recovery operations utilized assets of 2nd Brigade Headquarters, A/2-3 BTB, and 3-3 Aviation.
Due to my distance from Fort Stewart, I didn't hear any FM or VHF/UHF milair traffic on the operation, but I did catch activity on the Fort Stewart Trunked Repeater System. Most of the activity was on Talkgroup 2960, which has been identified as a 2nd Brigade talkgroup; SPARTAN elements (2nd Brigade), TITAN elements (2-3 BTB) and SHARK elements (3-3 Aviation) were coordinating requests for an AH-64 Apache to assist in the search. TITAN elements also passed last known altitude and heading to assist the AH-64 that SHARK 3 tasked to the search. Talkgroup 7312, which has been used extensively during recent 2nd Brigade training was used by SPARTAN X-RAY to advise training areas of the UAV crash.
The TRS was used to coordinate the activity of the units involved. Based on what I could hear, SHARK 3 had tasked DEATHSTALKER 6 (the AH-64 in the search) to communicate with 2-3 BTB on a SINGCARS net. All in all, it made for fascinating monitoring. Unfortunately I fell asleep before the UAV was located, so I missed the resolution of the search and how bad the UAV may have been damaged. TITAN mentioned that it's parachute had deployed, so hopefully damage was minimal.

Savannah, GA to Warner Robins, GA Road Trip
Today, I took a road trip from Savannah to Warner Robins to visit the Museum of Aviation and monitor activity at Robins AFB. Along the way, I monitored various military and public safety communications systems, my notes are inlcuded below. After several trips to the Robins AFB area since they put up the trunked system there, I have decided that unless your intent is to monitor the Robins ALC, it is best to lock out their talkgroups. Otherwise, the ALC is all you will hear; they are more active on the system than any other entity at the base.
Radios used during the trip were a Uniden BC780, Uniden BC796, Uniden BC245, Alinco DJ-X10T, and a Yaesu FT-8800.
