Not a Bad Day on the Radios

Location: Savannah, GA

April has been a slow military monitoring month for me. First, I've not had as many chances to play radio as I'd like and it seems that when I have had the chances there hasn't been much to hear. Today I've had the opportunity and it's been pretty fun. Overcast skies have kept down Townsend Range activity, but W-157 has been pretty busy with activity from MCAS Beaufort F/A-18s. A couple of flights have also gone to the Bulldog MOA.

I've also played around with ID Tracker on one of the BC-780s to do some recording. I'll be leaving out shortly to do some volunteer work on the B-17 at the Mighty Eighth Air Force museum and I'm going to let ID Tracker run on the 780 with the SUA and Range frequencies in it to see what I miss while I'm gone.

Another one of the new USCG frequencies has been active this morning as well. CG 107 (150.300) has been active with encrypted digital activity. So far there hasn't been any clear traffic, so I've got no idea who is using it or where it is coming from.

Al Stern's Military Monitoring Blog

Navy H-60 Emergency Landing

This morning, a flight of three Navy H-60s landed at Hunter AAF, one of them landing with an emergency. Due to the callsign used, I'm not sure which unit they were from or what type of H-60. NAVY 613 and flight landed with one of the aircraft flying very low and slow (tower advised Crash/Fire units that it was only flying at 70 kts). As the emergency aircraft approached, the other aircraft in the flight stayed high and above to handle radio communications. The entire flight landed without incident and taxied to Base Ops with Crash/Fire units following the emergency aircraft in.

I monitored the incident on 124.975, Hunter AAF Tower and the Fort Stewart/Hunter AAF TRS talkgroup 3504, Hunter Crash/Fire.

Mobile MilCom

The mobile BC-780 has brought the enjoyment of military monitoring back to my daily commute. This afternoon on the way home, I was able to monitor activity in the W-157 offshore warning area and in Townsend Range, which I was never able to do when attempting to monitor such activity with the BC-996.

From between Rincon and Port Wentworth on GA 21, I was able to hear NIKEL 3# (F/A-18C, VMFA-122) and HAWK 8# (F/A-18D, VMFA-533) working in W-157 on 385.300, 283.400, and 348.825. When NIKEL 3# transitioned to work Townsend Range, I was able to hear them quite well on 228.400.

I got an email this morning from Jack Nesmith, IDing one of the frequencies from Monday's Military Monitoring Recap post. He reports that 236.075 is Grand Bay Range near Moody AFB. I was thinking that it was a range or MOA frequency due to the nature of the traffic, but wasn't sure at the time, hence the "23 Wing?" label.

2-3 AVN and 4-3 AVN Helicopters Return to Hunter AAF

Throughout the late morning and early afternoon, UH-60s and CH-47s from 2-3 AVN and 4-3 AVN have been moving from Georgia Ports, where they have been unloaded from transport ships, to Hunter AAF.

They have been departing the ports on 134.100 with PORT CONTROL and switching to 124.975 with Hunter AAF tower.

For radio hobbyists, we can catch the AH-64Ds going to and from Hunter AAF and the Fort Stewart ranges. From my location, I lose them after they enter Fort Stewart's airspace due to their low flight level. Stations closer to Fort Stewart may be able to track them farther using Hunter AAF and Fort Stewart frequencies:

US DOD Southeastern Region TRS

Yesterday (14 July 2008) I was traveled down I-95 to the Jacksonville area for a short trip into downtown Jacksonivlle. I used the opportunity to do some very brief monitoring of the US Department of Defense Southeastern Region TRS. Due to the nature of the trip, I wasn't able to listen closely and take notes, but I did put the BC-396 into search and store mode. The 396 picked up on the 386.050 Control Channel for NSB Kings Bay and the 385.5625 Control Channel for NAS Jacksonville.

This afternoon I was able to fully review the contents of the BC-396's talkgroup search and store bank:

The 28### series talkgroups all seemed to be from NAS Kings Bay. From what little time I was able to listen, it seemed there was a lot of encrypted traffic. Some talkgroups seemed to be a mix of encrypted and unencrypted stations, i.e. the base station would be in the clear and the mobile would be encrypted. Likewise, during that short listening time, I did not hear any voice traffic (encrypted or clear) on the NAS Jacksonville Control Channel.

As far as 19457 and 62036 go, I did not note which Control Channel they were found on.

VMFA-122 "Werewolves" Base

VMFA-122 has recently changed it's squadron Base frequency. Formerly using 253.100, they are now using 361.800. 361.800 was previously used at MCAS Beaufort by VMFA-115 for their squadron Base.

VMFA-115 is currently deployed, so we'll have to see what they use for their squadron Base frequency when they return.
