Runway Maintenance at MCAS Beaufort, Some Squadrons Train out of Savannah

There is runway maintenance on the runway intersection at MCAS Beaufort which prevents the base's F/A-18 Hornets from flying out of the airfield until repairs are completed. As a result, some of the squadrons are temporarily operating out of Savannah IAP.

Aircraft from VMFA-122 (NIKELs), VMFA-251 (TBOLTs), and VMFA-312 (CHECKs) are at Savannah IAP this week. On Sunday, I heard TBOLTs checking in with their Base on 237.000, the Savannah CRTC Ops frequency.

VMFA-122 "Werewolves" Base

VMFA-122 has recently changed it's squadron Base frequency. Formerly using 253.100, they are now using 361.800. 361.800 was previously used at MCAS Beaufort by VMFA-115 for their squadron Base.

VMFA-115 is currently deployed, so we'll have to see what they use for their squadron Base frequency when they return.

VMFA-122 "Werewolves"

VMFA-122 at MCAS Beaufort have become the "Werewolves." Previously known as the "Crusaders," they have dropped that nickname prior to going on a deployment to the Middle East out of cultural sensitivities. The Crusades have quite a negative connotation in many areas of that part of the world.

VMFA-122 Frequencies

Back on 19 March, I wrote about VMFA-122's return to MCAS Beaufort. They have returned to the air around Beaufort this week using the same frequencies that they did prior to their deployment to MCAS Iwakuni.

253.100 - Base

VMFA-122 Returns to MCAS Beaufort

F/A-18s from VMFA-122 returned from their MCAS Iwakuni Japan rotation to MCAS Beaufort, SC on Friday. I caught two cells returning as SLIP 5# and SLIP 6#. I heard a weak and garbled callsign ??????? 3# on Beaufort's VHF tower frequency; I assume that it was the supporting tanker. Both SLIP flights checked in with NIKEL Base (VMFA-122) on 253.100 before landing.
