MidCoast Regional Airport/Wright Army Airfield

Over the weekend, I overheard Hunter AAF Tower telling LifeStar One that Marne Radio and Wright AAF tower will extend their hours in mid-November due to the opening of MidCoast Regional Airport. MidCoast Regional will be the civilian side of Wright Army Airfield as dual-use Military/Civilian airfield. Marne Radio will apparently extend their hours to 24 hours a day, five days a week and Wright Tower will extend their hours during the week.

Jamboree On The Air

Saturday's Boy Scouts Jamboree on the Air was a success. Philip, KA4KOE and Jim, KD4MJH did a wonderful job of getting everything together and Philip reports that there was a record attendance for the years that he has been involved in the JOTA. Thankfully it was well supported by local hams, some of whom were on site and assisting the Scouts with making contacts and others that remained home and made contacts with the Scouts. The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum was an excellent site to hold the event and I understand that the Scouts have been invited back for next year.

Philip, KA4KOE shows one of the Scouts how to log a contact

Kevin, KM5RT and Todd, KD6RYQ give the Scouts a quick Amateur Radio tutorial

I was working midnights so I arrived at the JOTA late in the afternoon. There were still some Scouts making contacts and through the 146.970 repeater and HF as well as a good group of hams helping the scouts out. A group of Scouts from Jacksonville who were camping at Fort McAllister visited the museum as part of their trip and participated in the JOTA after finding the setup during their tour. Everyone had a good time and I hope that it encouraged some of the Scouts to take up the radio hobby.

Below is a photo of Todd, KD6RYQ's "go box." Set up for ARES operations, Todd's "go box" made for an excellent temporary multiband station for an event like the JOTA. It offered dual band VHF/UHF and multiband HF voice and data capabilities in an easily portable package.

McEntire JNGB and Shaw AFB Sign Memorandum of Understanding

This article is from the 14 October 2007 issue of "The Item", the Sumter, SC newspaper. It will be interesting to see what this means for those of us who monitor both the 169th Fighter Wing and the 20th Fighter Wing.

McEntire, Shaw sign initiative
‘Momentous occasion’ strengthens bases’ ties

By JOE PERRY
Item Staff Writer
jperry@theitem.com

A brief Saturday afternoon ceremony at McEntire Joint National Guard Base served to further the relationship between Shaw Air Force Base and its nearby counterpart as commanders from both bases signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

The initiative directs the operation and administration of the Active Associate unit now operating at McEntire and is aimed at utilizing the experience of Air National Guard men and women to foster training and development of Air Force pilots and maintenance specialists. The unit also gives the 169th Fighter Wing at McEntire bolstered manpower in fully realizing its Air Expeditionary Force.

With a Swamp Fox F-16 looming in the corner of the main hangar, Col. Keith Coln, commander of the 169th Fighter Wing, noted the memorandum was a “momentous occasion” and signified the strengthening relationship between the bases.

“We’re going to pursue a common mission,” Coln said, “we protect the same Constitution. And whether you fly in my wing, or I fly in your wing, together we’re going to achieve. Together we’re going to set new goals, we’re going to make new accomplishments, and we’re going to achieve what our leaders want us to achieve for our national security objectives and to protect our country in this Global War on Terror that we’re engaged in today.”

To protect the country, he said, each base has to count on one another.

Col. James N. Post III, commander of the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw, said there are only 25 miles between the bases, “but we’ve been separated by those 25 miles up until today.”

Post said the day marked the beginning of “what I know will be a long-term relationship between the 20th Fighter Wing and the 169th.”

As the detachments continue to grow, he said, they will both realize “what Total Force really means,” and the opportunity it affords both bases to “build a synergy that can remain second to none.”

“We’re all part of the same U.S. Air Force,” he said, built upon the same foundation with the same core values of integrity, excellence and service above self.

“We’ll continue to grow stronger and grow together,” Post said, thanking everyone for the opportunity, “and for what you mean for our Air Force and the National Guard and for what you’ll do for these folks here at the 20th Fighter Wing on active duty.”

Coln then told his counterparts they were now part of the Swamp Fox family.

“You’ll always be Swamp Foxes,” he said, “no matter where you go.”

Coln said after the ceremony that McEntire — known as Congaree Air Base until a name change in 1961 — celebrated its 60th anniversary last year.

Boy Scouts Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) - October 20, 2007 at the Might Eighth Air Force Museum

Amateur Radio Operators in the Savannah area shouldn't forget about the Boy Scouts' Jamboree on the Air, taking place this weekend at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Pooler, GA. Hams are encouraged to stop by the event this Saturday to help expose the Boy Scouts to Amateur Radio. If you can't make it by, hang around the radios and try to make contacts with the Scouts on HF or on the 146.970 repeater locally.

The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum is located off of US 80 just east of I-95 in Pooler. As you enter the museum parking lot, you'll see an F-4 Phantom and a MiG-17 to your right. The Scouts will be setting up along the side of building just west of the Phantom and the MiG.

It is suggested that you wear long pants and bring some insect repellent; mosquitoes can be a problem in that area. If you don't plan on eating at the restaurant inside the museum, you might want to bring something with you (there are also several other restaurants in close proximity to the museum). If you want to visit the museum while you are there, it is completely separate from this event and you will have to pay admission.

169th Fighter Wing (SC ANG) Air-to-Air Frequencies

A little over a week or so ago, I noticed that the 169th Fighter Wing, SC ANG had changed their air-to-air frequencies. Until the last two days, I haven't had the chance to listen closely and determine their new presets. After monitoring yesterday and today, here is what the new preset list looks like (parentheses indicate which callsign usually uses the preset, there is a noticeable pattern to usage):

V14 - 141.825 (MACE)
V15 - 143.625 (VIPER)
V16 - 143.425 (DEMON)
V17 - 141.925 (HEAT)

USS Hawes, FFG 53 Trunked Repeater System

As reported by the Savannah Morning News and several TG stations last week, the USS Hawes, FFG 53 has been visiting Savannah during the Octoberfest weekend. After working the weekend, I took advantage of the holiday today to visit River Street and get a look at the ship (which unfornately is all you can do now, they no longer offer public tours when ships visit Savannah). As always, I had the BC396 with me and did a bit of searching while I was there.

As luck would have it, I came across the 400 MHz shipboard trunked repeater system on the USS Hawes. I doubt that I discovered all of the frequencies for the system because it wasn't very active, but here are the results of my search:

Admin Note

Due to the time I've been spending monitoring the Chatham-Effingham TRS in response to SCMPD's switch to digital talkgroups, I haven't had the chance to get together a MilCom recap. I have been doing some military monitoring so I'll get it together and post it as soon as possible.

Gulfstream TRS

I've been trying for awhile to figure out what type of trunking system the frequencies licensed to Gulfstream Aerospace for a business trunking system were part of, but I never heard anything on them even scanning them conventionally. I'll chalk that up to just not being in the area at the right time, but I finally heard something today. It seems that it is an LTR system, just not a very busy one. I only heard two talkgroups active, one of them only once. As such it was hard to determine an LCN for the frequencies (right now I'm trying them in numerical order).

Union Camp TRS

Union Camp has been licensed for a 900 MHz trunking system since 2001. I've tried monitoring the system from home on occasion and never have been successful. With all the extra memory available on the BC396, I programmed in the frequencies and discovered that it is not a very powerful system; it covers just the area around the Union Camp plant. Even though it doesn't cover a large area, it seems to be moderately active.
