Good FIre Related Twitter Feed: Federalfire

I came across this Twitter Feed tonight: http://twitter.com/Federalfire. If you're interested in keeping up with fire calls in the Savannah area, this is a pretty good Twitter Feed to follow.

Metro Fire Dispatch Changes and Tac Channel Usage

In the last week or so, Savannah-Chatham Metro Dispatch and the municipal fire departments that they dispatch have made some modifications to how the departments are dispatched and the radio channels they operate on.

Previously, Garden City FD, Isle of Hope FD, Port Wentworth FD, and Thunderbolt FD were dispatched on the Metro Fire Dispatch talkgroup (of the Chatham-Effingham TRS) 3568. Pooler and Bloomingdale FD were dispatched on the Pooler FD talkgroup 5424. Over the last week, I have noticed that all of the above are now being dispatched on talkgroup 3568 (a change that makes complete sense, it must have been a pain for the dispatchers to switch talkgroups when working with the different departments).

They are also making use of the Fire Tac channels that have been listed for so long in the Radio Reference database but never heard. Once the units have been dispatched and arrive on scene to an active incident, Metro Dispatch pushes them to one of the Fire Tac channels for their fireground operations. The use of the Fire Tac channels keep tactical traffic off of the dispatch channel and enable Metro Dispatch to know where to find the units to do safety checks and communicate with the incident commander.

3632 = Fire Tac 1
3664 = Fire Tac 2
3696 = Fire Tac 3
3728 = Fire Tac 4
3760 = Fire Tac 5
3792 = Fire Tac 6

West Chatham County Fire Department Callsigns and Unit Numbers

Since the beginning of the year, some of the West Chatham County Fire Departments have changed their callsigns and unit numbers. It appears that they have done this to align their callsigns with their respective Police Department callsigns. This numbering should also have the effect of making the department more easily recognized without using the city name along with the callsign.

It is worth noting that Garden City FD has used 12## for some time. The other department's use of 18##, 16##, 14## respectively is much more recent.

Bloomingdale Fire
8## - PD Unit Numbers
18## - Fire Department Personnel
1#, 2# - Unit Numbers

Garden City Fire
2## - PD Unit Numbers
12## - Fire Department Personnel
1#, 2# - Unit Numbers

Pooler Fire
6## - PD Unit Numbers
16## - Fire Department Personnel
6# - Unit Numbers

Port Wentworth Fire
4## - PD unit Numbers
14## - Fire Department Personnel
4# - Unit Numbers

Effingham Fire Dispatch Changes

In the last few days, I've heard Effingham County dispatching fire calls over the 155.355 EMS repeater. Prior to that, I heard units 6601 and 4401 (Effingham and Rincon fire chiefs respectively) doing testing with Dispatch, with test pages being sent over the EMS repeater. It seems that they don't quite have things fully sorted out. The audio from dispatch is muffled and hard to understand, not only to the scanner listener but to the fire units as well.

Savannah Chatham Metro Fire Dispatch Changes?

Over the last two days, I've noticed something different about how Savannah-Chatham Metro Dispatch has been dispatching the municipal fire departments. In the past, Bloomingdale, Garden City, Isle of Hope, Port Wentworth, and Thunderbolt Fire Departments were dispatched over talkgroup 3568 of the Chatham-Effingham TRS with Dispatch being multicast on the 154.385 repeater. Pooler Fire Deapartment was dispatched on talkgroup 5424 with Dispatch multicast on the 154.145 repeater. During several incidents today, I heard Garden City Fire Department and Pooler Fire Department dispatched on talkgroup 5424 with all traffic but dispatch tones (both Metro and the fire units) multicast on the 154.385 repeater. I'm not sure how long this has been in effect, but it bears watching.

Additionally, I have noticed that Metro Dispatch has been patching the Fire Dispatch talkgroup and the EMS Dispatch talkgroup together during complicated incidents so that the fire departments/first responders and EMS units (particularly Med Star) could communicate easier.
